WhatsApp-owner Facebook has received enough flak over the recent data breach scandal. And now, it's in damage repair mode. So, WhatsApp — the world’s most popular messaging service — has decided to raise its minimum age from 13 to 16 in the European Union. This step has been taken keeping in view the new data privacy rules coming into effect next month. To cut a long story short, teenagers below the age of 16 won't be allowed to access the application. Users will have to confirm their age while acknowledging the upcoming terms of service and privacy policy.

And Facebook, which follows a separate data policy, will ask teenagers aged 13 to 15 in Europe to nominate a parent or guardian to obtain permission for using the social media platform. This is in compliance with the European General Data Protection Regulation.

In an official blog post, WhatsApp said, "Next month, the European Union is updating its privacy laws to require greater transparency for how people's information is used online. WhatsApp is updating our Terms of Service and Privacy Policy where the law known as the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is taking effect. We are not asking for new rights to collect personal information with this update. Our goal is simply to explain how we use and protect the limited information we have about you."
