Battle Royale games have become a rage in the gaming world after the unprecedented success of games like PlayerUnknown's Battleground (PUBG) and Fortnite. Most game developers are trying to cash in on the trend with Battle Royale last-man-standing games of their own. But one company that will not be joining the rat race is Take-Two Interactive, the parent company behind the blockbuster GTA (Rockstar) and Borderlands (2K Games) franchises. Take-Two owns Rockstar Studios and 2K GAMEs video gaming labels.
Strauss Zelnick, CEO of Take-Two Interactive, said his company's studios won't be looking to cash in on the Battle Royale frenzy. "I think if one changed one's business to follow other people's big hits, you'd be constantly playing catch up," he added. "And to say you wouldn't be in second place is an understatement. You might remain in the last place. So it's our job to innovate, and more often than not that has driven our success," he told Gamespot.
Take-Two may be staying away from the Battle Royale cash cow, but it has a huge release planned for later this year, in 2K GAMES' Red Dead Redemption 2. Take-Two Interactive recently released a number of free-to-play games in China through its newly acquired game studio Social Point.
Coming back to the Battle Royale games, the genre's popularity seems to have skyrocketed over the past year. The two games in this category that released last year - PUBG and Fortnite - are currently two of the most played online games in the world. In December 2017, PUBG had three million concurrent players and recently, Fortnite servers crashed when 3.4 million players joined in at the same time.
