PlayStation users are furious at Sony for not letting them use their existing Fortnite accounts on the Nintendo Switch — a limitation not faced by Xbox One users. Sony had similarly earlier blocked cross-play and cross-platform progression between PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

What this means is that if you have used your Fortnite account even once on the PS4 or linked your Epic Games account to PlayStation Network, you won't be able to use that account on the Nintendo Switch. Similarly, for Xbox One, you may be able to use the account to play but all progress and in-game purchases will be gone when you switch platforms.

Interestingly, Sony still allows cross-play and cross-platform progression with Windows PC, Android and iOs versions of Fortnite. Here's a chart for your reference.

The backlash started ever since Epic Games launched the Nintendo Switch version of Fortnite at E3 and the issue was made public. Gamers have been demanding cross-platform support from Sony on social media ever since. Microsoft, the company behind Xbox, and Epic Games, publishers of Fortnite, revealed that it was indeed Sony who decided to prevent PlayStation 4 gamers from competing against other console owners.

Here's how gamers are reacting to the issue:

Sony's response to the outrage has been meek at best. "We're always open to hearing what the PlayStation community is interested in to enhance their gaming experience. With more than 80 million monthly active users on PlayStation Network, we've built a huge community of gamers who can play together on Fortnite and all online titles. We also offer Fortnite cross-play support with PC, Mac, iOS and Android devices, expanding the opportunity for Fortnite fans on PS4 to play with even more gamers on other platforms. We have nothing further to add beyond this at this point," Sony representatives told BBC.

Sony also received backlash in the past for stopping cross-platform play in Minecraft and Rocket League.
