Following the launch of Jio Phone, the 4G VoLTE feature device from Reliance Jio is grabbing headlines for several reasons. While many consumers across India are looking forward for the Rs 0 phone, there are also skeptics who have been questioning its limitations.
The new feature phone comes with regular numeric keys and a minuscule display, but also packs some amazing features to give its competitors a run for their money.
The new Jio feature phone comes with a pre-installed voice assistant to let you play any video on your device just by speaking a sentence. The feature phone will also come with Jio apps such as Jio music or movies, and will be capable of playing contents like any regular smartphone.
But the key drawback of the device is its incompatibility with WhatsApp. Since the feature phone runs on an operating system called KaiOS, which WhatsApp doesn’t support, the instant messenger app was not supposed to run on the device.
But a Factor Daily report claims that Reliance Jio has already initiated a discussion with WhatsApp owner Facebook to make sure that they can find a way out of the problem.
The report has also hinted that Facebook might unveil a Lite version of WhatsApp for the Jio Phone to fix the issue.
Reliance Jio has a similar messenger service called Jio Message which lets Jio users send and receive text messages for free, but it is only available to Jio users.
The new Jio phone will cost Rs 0 to customers as the company will charge a fully-refundable fee of Rs 1,500, which will be refunded after 3 years.
The Reliance Jio Phone registration for individuals wil go up on August 24 and the devices will be available in September. The company says it will deliver the devices on first come first served basis.
