ZTE's sub-brand Nubia on Thursday launched the Red Magic Phone — the company's first gaming smartphone under the Red Magic gaming wing. The Nubia Red Magic Phone will be adding to the latest tend of gaming smartphones following in the footsteps of the Razer Phone and the Xiaomi Black Shark. ASUS is also reportedly working on an Android gaming smartphone to be released under the ROG (Republic of Gamers) banner.

The Red Magic Phone will come with a 5.99-inch Full HD+ display with an edge-to-edge screen with 18:9 aspect ratio housed in an aluminium body with a diamond-cut back. The three edges on the back are fitted with RGB LED strips to go with the gaming theme. The cosmetic feature also makes it stand out from the competition.

The smartphone is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 Soc coupled with Adreno 540 GPU. It also packs 8GB RAM and 128GB of inbuilt storage. The device will run Android 8.1 OS and come with a special Game Boost feature to free up as much resource as possible to optimise gaming performance and maximise the frame rates. It's equipped with a 3,800mAh battery, advertised to provide 7 hours of gameplay on a single charge.

Nubia claims that the Red Magic is the first smartphone to use an air convection cooling system, which uses advanced thermal modelling techniques to dissipate heat and keep the device cool, even during heavy usage.

On the camera front, the Nubia Red Magic Phone has a powerful 24MP single camera on the back, capable of 4K recording and taking 720p slow-motion videos at 120fps. There's an 8MP front camera for selfies. The speakers come with DTS Technology and a Smart Amplifier system for an immersive experience while listening to music or playing games.

The Red Magic's 835 chipset sets it a step below Xiaomi's Black Shark gaming smartphone, which is equipped with the latest Snapdragon 845 Soc, which is more powerful than its predecessor. It's expected that the Red Magic will be priced accordingly. The base variant of the Black Shark costs 2,999 Yuan (Rs 32,000 approx).
