HMD Global, the company behind the Nokia brand, has teased that the Nokia 8110 4G featurephone may get the much-coveted WhatsApp support very soon.
The hint came just hours after Indian telecom giant Reliance Jio announced the JioPhone 2 and revealed that both the upcoming featurephone and the original JioPhone will get WhatsApp and YouTube support. Both iterations of the JioPhone run KaisOS operating system and developers KaiOS Technologies tweeted out the news from their own handle.
HMD Global's chief product officer (CPO) Juho Sarvikas picked up on KaiOS's tweet and quote retweeted it with a little tease. "Oh look, WhatsApp on KaiOS! Looking forward to going (banana emoji)s!" he wrote. The banana emoji holds particular significance here, considering the Nokia 8110 is also known as the 'banana phone' because of its shape. It's even available in a Banana Yellow colour variant.
Sarvikas's hint is also very probable on technical grounds, considering the Nokia 8110 4G also runs on the KaiOS.
One of the biggest problems with budget featurephones has been the lack of WhatsApp support. Now, with Jio adding WhatsApp support and Nokia expected to follow suit, we may see it become a common trend.
To recall, the Nokia 8110 4G is a rehash of the classic Nokia 8110 from the mid-'90s. The 4G version was announced at MWC 2018 earlier this year.
