Asus is reportedly preparing to release the ROG Phone in India in September this year, making it the first gaming smartphone to officially launch in the country. To recall, the Asus ROG Phone, released under the company's Republic of Gamers banner, was unveiled at Computex 2018 earlier this month.
During the launch, Asus didn't divulge any information about the global availability of the smartphone outside its home market, Taiwan. But a recent report from popular website GSMArena suggests that the smartphone may officially launch in India followed by Europe.
The ROG Phone is the latest in a slew of gaming smartphones which launched following the Razer Phone's release back in 2017. But none of the gaming-focused devices, including the Razer Phone, ZTE's Nubia Red Magic or Xiaomi's Black Shark, have been launched in India officially.
If the reports turn out to be true, it would be interesting to see how much the ROG Phone is priced at for the Indian market.
As per specs go, the Asus ROG Phone looks more powerful than its competitors, at least on paper. Here's a detailed look into the specs.
ROG Phone specifications
The ROG Phone comes with a 6-inch AMOLED FHD+ screen with 2160x1080 resolution and HDR support. The display boasts a refresh rate of 90Hz with 1ms response time for a smooth and seamless gaming experience. To recall, the Razer Phone came with a refresh rate of 120hz.
The front of the device is all glass with two speaker grills on both ends as part of its stereo speaker setup. The back is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass and has a ROG logo with customisable RGB lighting. There are cutouts on the back panel to house cooling vents and the camera module. The phone comes equipped with a 3D GameCool vapour-chamber cooling system to keep the device from overheating during lengthy sessions.
The ROG Phone is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 Soc coupled with 8GB of RAM and 128GB or 512GB of inbuilt storage. The device will most likely run an Android 8.1 or 8.0 Oreo-based ROM with special tweaks for gaming needs.
The device has a 12MP+8MP dual camera setup on the back and an 8MP selfie camera on the front. It's the same setup present in Asus's flagship Asus Zenfone 5.
The device packs a large 4,000mAh battery which supports Asus's HyperCharge fast charging technology.
The Asus ROG Phone has a special feature called X Mode, which can be triggered by squeezing the sides of the phone. Activating the X Mode closes all background processes unnecessary for gaming to make sure maximum resources are available to run the game. This is done by triggering one of the three ultrasonic pressure sensitive zones on the phone. The other two can be used as virtual trigger buttons in games or can be mapped for any in-game control if the game allows it.
The ROG Phone's headphone jack supports 24-bit/192Khz Hi-Res Audio playback and supports DTS Headphone X for immersive surround sound experience.
In addition to these, the ROG Phone also comes with a host of add-on accessories to enrich the gaming experience even further.
