Ed Sheeran is Spotify's most-streamed artist, Rihanna retains top spot among female singers

Sheeran's song Shape of You was the top track with 1.4 billion streams

Ed Sheeran has been named the most-streamed artiste of 2017 by music streaming service Spotify. The British singer beat Drake, The Weeknd, Kendrick Lamar, and The Chainsmokers to become the most streamed artiste for the current year, said a statement posted on Spotify's official website.

Sheeran's album Divide was the most streamed album of the year worldwide with 3.1 billion streams. Sheeran's song Shape of You was the top track with 1.4 billion streams. The 26-year-old singer also holds the crown of Spotify's number one streaming artiste with over 47 million listeners.

Meanwhile, Rihanna was once again named the Most Streamed Female Artists by the streaming giant. The We Found Love hitmaker beat Taylor Swift, Selena Gomez, Ariana Grande and Sia to clinch the top spot.

"Ed Sheeran absolutely dominated this year with the release of his record-breaking album, Divide," said Stefan Blom, Spotify's chief content officer.

"There is no doubt that 2017 was the year of Ed Sheeran, and we are thrilled that so many millions of music fans have discovered, listened to and shared his music on Spotify. Congratulations to Ed on an amazing achievement," he added.
