Fighting a violent bear in The Revenant got Leonardo DiCaprio a rich dividend at Oscar 2016. But over the past 23 years, many a beast simply ate him up at the Oscars. T2 Online tells you who they are
Tommy Lee Jones
The 1994 Oscars saw a wet-behind-the-ears Leonardo Di Caprio step on the red carpet, contending for the best supporting actor award for What's Eating Gilbert Grape. But there was a certain Fugitive waiting to eat up our young boy's chances. Tommy Lee Jones was the Papa bear.
Cut to 11 years later. Leo is up against the likes of Clint Eastwood, Johnny Depp, Don Cheadle...and Jamie Foxx as Ray. Jamie was the Foxx who pipped the rest. For Leo the setback was Un. Bear. Able.
2007. Leo thought he would get third time lucky. And he had added much swag to his act by now. But who knew there was a bear hiding in Forest? The Last King of Scotland made Leo and Martin Scorcese bleed diamonds.
Just when we thought Leo would give up on the elusive Oscar bear, he raised our hope again by becoming the Wolf (of Wall Street). And he wore two hats – of the actor and the producer. But Matthew McConaughey's Dallas Buyers Club handed Leo another Oscar slip.
So these were the 'bears' that gave Leo nightmares on previous occasions. Now let's introduce you to the man who played the bear in The Revenant.
The person who mauled our favourite actor on the sets, Glenn Ennis. He is a Canadian actor and stuntman by profession and is known for his work in movies like Man of Steel, Deadpool and X-Men. In preparation for his role, Ennis studied videos of how bears hunted.
FYI, Glenn is currently on the sets of upcoming movie Braven and is playing stunt-double for Jason Momoa (of Game of Thrones fame).
As you talk of special effects playing a major role in the movie, at least when it came to the bear sequences, Glenn said that many would actually fantasize about being in his position.
