We often hear and read about how bullying can affect one's mental health. This story, which has gone viral recently, will give you more perspective.

South African TV and radio personality, Ziya Xulu, came across a sweet elderly lady – who religiously complimented her and told her how beautiful she was each day.

At first, Zia was flattered, too, and loved the compliments coming her way but was confused as to why the old lady did it so often.

She later found out that the woman's 20-year-old daughter had committed suicide after being bullied for her dark complexion.

So, the old lady compliments girls and makes them believe that they are truly beautiful in their own right and shouldn't think otherwise.

As soon as Zia shared this, her tweet went viral and people were left heartbroken. Some shared their anecdotes and requested Zia to give the old lady a big hug.

Racism is one of the major vices every society battles. And so is bullying. So many lives are lost in hate crimes, and the number of suicides because of constant bullying worldwide is alarming. People fail to realise the implications their words can have on someone.

Everything, everyone is beautiful. It's high time we let go of fake, unrealistic beauty standards set by biased people who don't know the real meaning of beauty. Take off those bias-tainted glasses and you'll see the world in a different light for sure. And girlies (boys, too) of every colour, every shape, every soul — we all are beautiful. *hugs and kisses*
