Suresh Raina has been MS Dhoni's man-Friday for eight seasons in the IPL. Finally, he emerged out of Dhoni's shadows when the Gujarat Lions beat Pune Supergiants by 7-wickets at Rajkot.

Chasing 164 to win, the Lions came out roaring with Aaron Finch and Brendon McCullum going hell for leather. Finch brought up his second consecutive fifty in as many games and McCullum got his campaign kick started with a 31-ball 49. The opening pair added 85 runs in 8 overs and sealed the fate of the match. Suresh Raina got 24 while Dwayne Bravo remained unbeaten on 22.

Earlier, electing to bat first, Pune skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni saw his decision justified as openers Faf du Plesis and Ajinkya Rahane (21) gave the team a good start. After Rahane was sent back by Pravin Tambe, Kevin Pietersen (37) joined du Plesis in the middle and the duo proceeded to lay the foundation for a competitive total.
But Bravo and Ravindra Jadeja got stuck into the Pune middle-order and pulled them back. It took a 10-ball 22 from MS Dhoni to lift Pune to 163/5. Jadeja (2/18), Tambe (2/33) were the pick of the bowlers for Gujarat.
