Virat Kohli is redefining fitness in cricket
Virat Kohli can't stop scoring. This season he has dazzled the cricket fans with his performances and has single-handedly won games for India and Royal Challengers Bangalore. (Watch: Kohli trolls Ashwin)
What's the secret of his success?
“Fitness”, says his strength and conditioning coach, Shankar Basu, “Kohli is a total professional right from the way he eats and trains to the way he takes care of his body. I have seen his transition from the U-19 level and he has taken fitness to another level.”
The man and the reason behind all the sprints in the ground and responsible for the transformation in my strength. Thank you mr. Shankar basu. You have taught me how to train like a professional and helped me break limits of pushing my body and iam grateful for that 🙏🙏 💪🏻💪🏻🏋🏼🏋🏼. #toptrainer #topman#greatknowledge
Basu, who is also the strength and conditioning coach of Royal Challengers, has been working with Kohli for a long time and had set a benchmark for him, Novak Djokovic. (Check out: IPL's Richie Rich)
“I have always told him that Novak Djokovic should be his target”, said Basu.
Djokovic, the Laureus award winner, is perhaps the most dominating sportsman currently and it is not a surprise that Basu wanted Kohli to emulate the fitness standards of the Serbian tennis superstar.
However, the man in-charge of Kohli's fitness feels that this year, the Indian Test captain has gone past the Serb, “Now, I feel that Djokovic should be targeting Kohli, he definitely has some catching-up to do."
Tall claims but there's a lot of merit in it. The 27-year-old put on a superb display of fitness in the recently concluded T20 World Cup against Australia where he ran the Aussie fielders ragged with his running between the wickets. The fitness bug has bit Kohli hard. So much so, that he has invested a lot of money in setting up a gym-chain.
