You know Shoaib Akhtar as the man who would run through a batting line-up on his day. You also know Shoaib Akhtar as the man who'd aggresively punch the air after taking a wicket. And he's also known as the man who could give someone like Sachin Tendulkar a nightmare. But do you know the journey of the fastest bowler in the history of the game? In a show hosted by Wasim Akram, The Sportsman, Akhtar opened up about his journey and the struggles he's faced on his way.
We know Akhtar comes from a humble background as he threw light on his journey in his autobiography, Controversially Yours. But here are some more details the Akhtar fan in you would love to know. He said he was very unsual in his heyday and would stand out and come forward aggresively. People were always jealous of him. He added that when you rise, you face enough resistance, which is good in a way.
About his inspiration in life, he said: "I first saw you (Wasim Akram) and Imran bhai (Imran Khan), and then Waqar Younis. Then I thought of copying all three of you so that I become something. Sometimes I used to try your action and copy Waqar’s gesture of moving fingers on the face.”
He then further added that if there are no heroes, there's no inspiration. "In the process of copying, I became a different product and since I'm not that handsome like Imran bhai, so it is impossible to become like him and this is the way I started. However, one thing was clear, that I always wanted to be a fast bowler right from the very first day. I wanted to bowl very fast and this was the only thing which I always wanted to do."
