Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho quashed all rumours linking the English giants to Lionel Messi, saying that “he belongs to FC Barcelona”. Mourinho, who already spent a world record amount to bring Paul Pogba from Juventus in the summer, had been linked with Messi after reports emerged that the Argentine had stalled talks of a contract extension at the Nou Camp.

Mourinho put the rumours to rest at a press conference ahead of Manchester United’s next Europa League game, saying that Messi and Barcelona are made for each other and that he should end his career with the Catalan club.

Messi had arrived at La Masia as a child from Newell’s Old Boys in Argentina and it was Barcelona who paid for his growth hormone deficiency treatment when no one else would.

Manchester United’s cross-town rivals, City, too have been linked to the five-time Ballon d’Or winner. With Pep Guardiola at the helm, a  move to City seems more likely than one to United, if it even happens.
