Amitabh Bachchan loves to add his own twist to his opinions on social media and it was pretty visible with the Bollywood star's recent tweet, which we presume was meant to somehow congratulate France on their recent FIFA World Cup 2018 triumph. But unlike most of his 'funky' tweets, Big B's take on this one didn't quite sit well with football fans.
France, coached by 1998 World Cup-winning captain Didier Deschamps, beat Croatia in the final at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow on Sunday to win the country's second World Cup ever. Bachchan, who was in Russia with his family to watch the tournament, took to Twitter immediately after and wrote, "Thats it then ... AFRICA won the World Cup 2018 !!!"
In case you think Big B somehow got something wrong, it's not quite that. Out of the 23-member French World Cup squad, 16 have immigrant backgrounds. Most of the 16, including key players such as Paul Pogba, Kylian Mbappe and N’Golo Kante, can trace back their origins to African nations. Big B's tweet was a reference to the presence of the overwhelming number of African-origin contingent in the Les Blues squad.
Bachchan's attempted curveball of a tweet, however, didn't quite hit the spot when it came to football fans. A lot of them responded to the actor's tweet, accusing him of trying to oversimplify the issue for the sake of a 'cool' tweet and also pointing to the fact that despite their origin, the players are still French.
Soon after, Big B put out another tweet which was, erm, a lot more straightforward.
The Sholay star is known to be a big football fan and travelled to Russia for the World Cup with son Abhishek, daughter Shweta and grandchildren Navya Naveli and Agastya.
