Sports and superstition go hand-in-hand — all fans would agree. Remember Octopus Paul, who predicted the winners for World Cup 2010? Well, this year the fate of football lies in the paws of a feline named Achilles.
A deaf, white cat named Achilles is soon to begin his work as Russia's official soothsayer for the World Cup, reports AFP. The cat is specially trained to predict the winners and will be presented with bowls marked with teams' flags.
"We went for Achilles because he is beautiful, first of all, but also because — like all white cats with blue eyes — he is deaf, so he has a great deal of intuition, he sees with his heart," Anna Kasatkina, a vet who oversees guard-cats at Saint Petersburg's Hermitage museum, told AFP. During the football tournament, Achilles will be living in the Cat Republic cafe near the museum and will be meeting the guests.
Can Achilles carry forward Paul's psychic legacy or will fade out like Swiss guinea pig Madame Shiva and Brit Piranha Pele? Only time can tell.
BTW, Achilles picked Russia to win the first match of the season, and we can't wait to see how that goes. Take a look at Achilles picking the winner of the first football match, and Tweeple responding to this aborb furball.
