There’s hardly any good news when we spell Argentina and football in the same sentence of late. Lionel Messi and team crashed out of the World Cup after losing to France in the Round of 16. And now, the tragic death of 25-year-old goalkeeper Facundo Espindola has thrown the Argentine football community into a state of mourning.

This happened in the early hours of Sunday when Espindola was stabbed to death during a street brawl outside a bar in Hurlingham, Buenos Aires.

According to Spanish daily Marca, two men – Nahuel Oviedo from San Telmo and his Paraguayan friend – have been arrested.

Here’s what appears to be CCTV footage of the incident.

Espindola, a national B level footballer, was the product of the River Plate youth academy.
