Hamilton, the hit musical, which led with record-breaking 16 nominations, won a total of 11 awards, including Best Musical, Best Original Score for mastermind Lin-Manuel Miranda and Best Leading Actor in a Musical for Leslie Odom Jr, at the Tony Awards last evening.

The incredible thing about the awards was that for the first time ever, the top 4 honours went to people of colour. Considering the last Academy Awards earned flak for nominating all white actors for second year in a row, this refreshing move came as a pleasant surprise.

The winners truly deserved the awards. Leslie Odom Jr earned the best actor in a leading role in a musical award for his performance in Hamilton; Daveed Diggs earned the title of the best actor in a featured role in a musical for Hamilton; Renée Elise Goldsberry took home best actress in a featured role in a musical for Hamilton, again; and Cynthia Erivo received the best actress in a leading role in a musical award for The Color Purple. It was truly a historic moment on a global platform.

James Corden hosted the 70th annual Broadway awards show, on Sunday night, at the Beacon Theater in New York.
