Rahat Fateh Ali Khan has recreated his late uncle Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan's song Yeh jo halka halka suroor hai, and the music video has actors Ayushmann Khurrana and Amy Jackson making a crackling debuty as an onscreen pair.
The video, shot by filmmaker Pradeep Sarkar, rekindles his penchant for period drama that we had seen in Parineeta in a well-shot footage stretching across two lifetimes.
But the plot is puerile and quite brainless. Ayushmann is in love with Amy. He then vanishes into the past to rescue Amy's grandmother (Amy in a double role) from mutinous soldiers in a medieval British pseudo-historical setting.
Apart from the dubious historical context, the video suffers from a serious bout of creative kleptomania. Bits and pieces of borrowed ideas and artefacts do not really make a telling video pastiche.
What shines through the tawdry costume drama is the unmistakable chemistry between the actors. Ayushmann and Amy, who have never been seen onscreen together, look compatible and comfortable together. They sure deserve to be in a full-length professionally made feature film. Pradeep Sarkar, are you listening?
