From now on, transgenders can also vie for the Miss Universe crown as the organisation that runs the beauty pageant has lifted the ban on the gender category's participation.
As a result of that, Angela Ponce, who was recently crowned Miss Spain, will be the first transgender candidate to make the cut in the competition.
The 26-year-old trans model from Seville has said that her aim is to give the LGBTQ+ community around the world its due respect.
"Bringing the name and colours of Spain before the universe is my great dream. My goal is to be a spokesperson for a message of inclusion, respect and diversity not only for the LGBTQ+ community but also for the entire world," she said after her win.
Ponce had competed for the Miss Spain title last year as well, but couldn't win the pageant
Transgenders are now welcome into the competition due to the efforts of 29-year-old Canadian model Jenna Talackov, who started a legal battle after not being allowed to compete at Miss Universe for being a transgender.
Talackov then successfully won the case, and was allowed to compete in Miss Universe Canada, which was back then owned by US President Donald Trump. Talackov has paved the way for all transgender women in America to take part in the Canada-based competition.
