Hollywood is giving us casting goals we didn't even know we needed. Why else would it cast Helena Bonham Carter as a Bond villain!
The British actor is reportedly the favourite to play the baddie in the next James Bond movie titled Bond 25, which is set for a 2019 release. According to a Mirror report, the producers prefer Helena over Angelina Jolie, who is also being considered for the role.
“Everyone thinks Angelina Jolie is going to get the part but bosses want Helena more. At the moment they are just finalising the cast," a source revealed to the Mirror.
Helena has played some sinister roles in the past, from the Death Eater Bellatrix Lestrange in the Harry Potter franchise to Red Queen in Alice in Wonderland. The 52-year-old is currently set to star as Queen Elizabeth's sister, Princess Margaret in the Netflix series The Crown. She will also be a part of the much awaited Ocean's 8.
The double Oscar nominee has a stellar filmography and will make for a formidable Bond antagonist. Bond 25 is the 25th film of the global spy franchise and is being directed by Danny Boyle, with the role of 007 being reprised by Daniel Craig.
It was revealed a few weeks back that the film is set to have a female Bond villain. "Boyle is said to have a female villain at the centre of his Bond film and he is actively casting the role now. I’ve heard the usual suspects of A-listers who have supposedly met with Boyle or will meet with him…the part is billed as someone with a ‘personal connection’ to Bond," a source had revealed to the Express website back in April.
Some of James Bond's most dynamic enemies over the years have been women. Elektra King (Sophie Marceau) in The World is Not Enough (1999), May Day (Grace Jones) in A View to Kill (1985) and of course, the iconic Rosa Klebb (Lotte Lenya) in From Russia with Love (1963), have all been formidable adversaries to Mr Bond.
Though the plot for Bond 25 has not been revealed, it has been reported that an original script is being drafted by Boyle. The 25th Bond film has been in the news for a while, owing to its casting issues. While Craig had initially said that he would rather slash his wrists than play Bond again, he did take up the 007 mantle again for the fifth time.
Tweeple, of course, have weighed in on the casting of Helena, and have unanimously said, "What. Took. So. Long?"
