Mahendra Singh Dhoni stepped down as India's limited-overs captain yesterday. His announcement saddened many a cricket buff, one of them being reel-life Maahi, Sushant Singh Rajput.
Ruing Dhoni's sudden decision, the actor, in an interview to DNA, said, "I don't know the reason behind his decision and I am really saddened by the news. On behalf of every Indian cricket fan and the BCCI, I would like to thank MS Dhoni for his outstanding contribution as the captain of the Indian team across all formats."
Sushant played Mahendra Singh Dhoni in Neeraj Pandey's 2016 film M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story, and his Mahi act was on point. Be it his helicopter shot or emulating the cricketer's cool-as-a-cucumber persona, the actor matched up to the real life Dhoni. It was later revealed that Dhoni himself had suggested Sushant's name for the role.
Sushant and Dhoni bonded well on the sidelines of the movie, too. Be it getting posey with Dhoni's bundle of joy Ziva or hitting the road with the cricketer on a bike, the real and reel life Mahi had a whale of a time together.
SSR also took to Twitter yesterday to give a vote of thanks to Dhoni. The actor wrote, "There is no one like you. You're the reason for millions of smiles. Take a bow my Captain."
Sushant also said, "I'm gonna miss him dearly as the captain of Indian cricket team. Under his leadership, the Indian team has touched new heights and his achievements will remain etched forever in the annals of Indian cricket."
When asked about Dhoni's decision, the Kai Po Che! actor said, "Knowing him, we can say that it must be a wise decision and it also explains why he is one of the best leaders we have had. He doesn't share his personal stuff with anyone, the nation and the team always come first for him."
