Ranveer Singh has finally chalked out dates from his busy schedule to play cricketing legend Kapil Dev in his biopic. The film will be helmed by Kabir Khan, who is finally taking a break from his frequent collaborator Salman Khan after their last debacle Tubelight. The film will revolve around India’s unexpected victory at the Cricket World Cup in 1983, where Kapil played a pivotal role as a skipper. In 1983, India won its first World Cup after beating the West Indies.
Co-producer Vishnu Induri has revealed the news in an interview to Asian Age. He said they had been trying to make this film for the last three and a half years.
"I have now got a combination of Ranveer Singh and Kabir Khan. Ranveer Singh is playing Kapil Dev’s role and it’s a bigger movie now," he was quoted as saying.
Vikramaditya Motwane, who is co-producing the film, says Ranveer is apt for the role. "1983 is the greatest Indian underdog sports story ever and we're delighted to be making it with Kabir and Ranveer. Taking on the mantle of playing a legend like Kapil Dev isn't easy, but if any actor can do it, it's Ranveer," Motwane of Phantom films said in a statement.
It was reported earlier that Ranveer's buddy Arjun Kapoor was in talks to play the titular character in the biopic, since the makers were not getting the dates from the Befikre actor. Ranveer is currently giving final touches to his character of Alauddin Khilji in Padmavati. He also has Zoya Akhtar's Gully Boy in his kitty.
