When it comes to spy movie franchises, we see men rule the big screen in Hollywood. Be it Agent 007 aka James Bond or Jason Bourne or Ethan Hunt. But what about girls? We only have Charlie's Angels. And, we demand for more.
Guess what? Actor Jessica Chastain is here with a remedy. She's successfully brought together a group of uber-talented award-winning actors – read: Marion Cortillard, Lupita Nyong'o, Penelope Cruz, Fan Bingbing and herself – to do a spy movie titled 355.
She took to Twitter to share the great news.
Helming the project will be Simon Kinberg – the producer, scriptwriter turned director – who will make his directorial debut with X-Men: Dark Phoenix (2019). He's worked with Chastain on it, and that's when she got the idea of having a female-spy franchise.
Jessica and her spy-gang took Cannes by storm with this news, but she told Deadline all about it. She said, "I had so much fun working on The Helpthat I always wanted to do another female ensemble film. I love the Bourne movies, the Mission: Impossible films, and wondered why, except for Charlie’s Angels, there hadn’t been a true female ensemble action-thriller spy film. That got my wheels going, along with the idea of casting actresses from all over the world to truly make it an international project. I realised the incredible creative freedom we would have with that. I brought the idea to Simon, told him about the actresses I was thinking of, and he was so sweet. He said, ‘I want to do it with you'."
Now came the task of getting together a team. So she started calling her contemporaries and got them on board. “Then I called all the women, told them what I was envisioning and that I wanted it to be a collaborative process, and how we would all create this together. The one thing that felt important is that we all show up at Cannes, because that would be the beginning of our journey together. Every single actress I called said yes, on the phone call. They committed to Cannes and to everything. So far it has been a very wonderfully easy process,” she was quoted as saying.
But what's the film about and why is it titled 355? “Agent 355 was the code name of a female spy during the American Revolution. She was one of the very first spies for the United States, and her identity is still unknown. For a lot of women who work in the CIA and other organisations like that, Code 355 is a universal slang term for female spy. It’s the invisible woman who was never named,” said Jessica.
All the gorgeous women will be top agents of world organisations in the film, and they will unite to stop a global organisation from acquiring a weapon that could destroy the world and spread worldwide chaos. Woah! Consider us sold!
We simply #CantWait for this one and nor can Netizens!
We quite like 355, but why is it not called Sisterhood of the Travelling Spies? Just kidding!
More power to you ladies. Woohoo!
